Holy Week in Trapani

The Holy Week is the time when Christianity, particularly the Catholic Church celebrates the faith-related events to the last days of Jesus, including above all his Passion, Death and Resurrection.

The Holy Week of Trapani and in particular the procession of the Mysteries of Good Friday, represent one of the most important events in Italy for the artistic value of the twenty statuary groups, Trapani’s love for their procession, the singular duration of the event that is articulated in 24 hours, the care of the individual Ceti in the organization of the sacred representation. Another added value is represented by the other two processions that takes place in Trapani during the Holy Week: the procession of the "Mother Pietà dei Massari", which takes place on Holy Tuesday and the procession of the "Mother Pietà del Popolo", which takes place on Holy Wednesday. The fulcrum of all is the Church of Purgatory where throughout the year the Sacred Groups of the Mysteries and the Icon of the Mother Pietà of the Massari are kept.

Here is the complete calendar:

  • Tuesday: Procession of the Mother Pietà dei Massari (starting from the church of Purgatory);
  • Wednesday:
    Procession of the Pietà Pietà del Popolo (from the church of Maria SS.Addolorata);
    Procession of the Pietà Pietà dei Massari (from the chapel in Piazza Lucatelli with return to the church of Purgatory);
  • Thursday: Preparation of the Sacred Groups of the Mysteries: silver, lighting and flowers;
  • Friday:
    Descent of the Cross (Chiesa S. Maria del Gesù);
    Procession exit of the Mysteries;
    Chiesa Anime Sante of Purgatory, Piazza Purgatorio;
  • Saturday: Re-entry of the Procession of the Mysteries;
  • Sunday: Procession of the Risen Christ.
